James Franco在Twitter更新訪問Jim Jarmusch的視頻，裡面有提到湯湯的角色定位：

湯湯的角色有以下特點（以下文章片段轉自Tom Hiddleston粉絲站）：

- Tom plays a depressed underground musician who is able to play all kinds of string instruments    but he prefers the electronic guitar.

- Tom and Tilda Swinton both play unique bohemian outsider types of characters

- Both characters are in love with all arts the human race produces.

- They get their blood they need to live from deals with doctors etc.

- Tom's character is a kinda Hamlet like character and very moody.

- They are not the usual kind of vampires, no neck biting etc.

- Film is centered most of the time in Detroit, but it begins and ends in Tangiers.

- Tom's character loves sciences.

湯湯是個地下Rocker？而且是個對弦樂很上手的Rocker 

看來他是彈電吉他沒錯了，我的媽啊抖森那小身板演Rocker不會很Gay嗎？賈木許你確定你要拍一般向愛情片？不是坑大家的吧？！怎麼覺得劇情會變成湯湯周旋在兩女中，然後被灌醉再被男配角來一發（我這邪惡的小腦袋到底在想些什麼）喔，拜託，湯抖森那氣勢能壓得了誰可以麻煩賈老大來跟我解釋解釋？

總之，湯湯會是一個憤世嫉俗帶有哈姆雷特喜怒不定性格的非常規吸血鬼，他不咬人脖子（太可惜了！）餓了會跟醫生拿血（希望是男醫生！），同時喜歡科學跟人類藝術（湯爸跟湯媽表示欣慰），這隻湯蝙蝠（並不是所有的吸血鬼都是蝙蝠好嗎？）還帶著波西米亞風格，天，這設定好複雜 

湯抖森不是怕被定型嗎？怎麼這角色看起來跟以往一樣是個有病的文青？你到底有多偏好非主流偏激性格跟抑鬱寡歡探討人生探討家庭探討世界的角色啊先生……不過這次設定太微妙，講著講著就期待了起來……最後在吐槽一句，明明主要戲份在Detroit，開頭跟收尾在抖森每天看日出哀號沒網路好無聊的Tangiers，那你們這劇組當初去德國拍這麼久是為什麼啊OTL
